The first full-length recording of
THE GOLDEN APPLE is on sale NOW!
PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song, has released the first full-length recording of Jerome Moross & John Latouche’s classic 1954 musical THE GOLDEN APPLE, the first off-Broadway musical to win the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical This new two-disc set, for the first time, preserve the score in its entirety, including nearly 90 minutes of previously unrecorded song.Until now, this 135-minute
through-sung musical was preserved only in a 50-minute original cast LP. The album will has been produced by PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker. Moross’s daughter, Susanna Moross Tarjan, serves as Executive Producer. The album was released on May 19, 2015, and is available for sale at the PS Classics website, www.psclassics.com or www.Amazon.com.

The new recording stems from a fully-staged production mounted by Lyric Stage (Steven Jones, Founding Producer) that premiered in Irving, TX, in October of 2014, featuring an orchestra of 38 and a 43-member cast. The cast is headed by Christopher J. Deaton as Ulysses, Kristen Lassiter as Penelope, Danielle Estes as Helen, Deborah Brown as Mother Hare and Andy Baldwin as Menelaus. The production was directed by Stefan Novinski and choreographed by John de los Santos, with music direction by conductor Jay Dias.

According to Krasker, “Back in 1994, when I was working as a free-lance producer, I made the rounds of all the labels in town, trying to get them to undertake a studio cast recording of THE GOLDEN APPLE, so it’s something Susanna Tarjan and I have been talking about for over two decades. When Susanna alerted us last fall about the Lyric Stage production, and when we heard how magnificent it was, with that giant cast and orchestra, we committed to a recording.

When it premiered in 1954, composer Jerome Moross and librettist John Latouche’s THE GOLDEN APPLE was hailed as “the most original musical since Oklahoma” (The Washington Post), “the best thing that has happened in and to the theatre in a very long time” (New York Daily News), and “a magnificent achievement. A sensational success. The most imaginative work of its kind” (New York Daily Mirror). Its blend of American folklore and Greek myth, popular entertainment and high art, and musical comedy and operatic drama “stood Manhattan on its ear,” winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle prize for Best Musical. It opened Off-Broadway at The Phoenix Theatre on March 11, 1954, before transferring to Broadway on April 20, 1954.

An eight-time Grammy nominee (for its cast albums of Assassins, Nine: The Musical, Grey Gardens, Company, A Little Night Music, Sondheim on Sondheim, Follies and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess), PS Classics' catalog includes award-winning cast recordings; solo albums by such artists as Victoria Clark, Maureen McGovern, Kate Baldwin, Steven Pasquale and Liz Callaway; and restorations of long-lost musicals, including Sweet Bye and Bye, Kitty's Kisses and Sweet Little Devil. Recent releases include the Original Cast Recording of Fun Home, Philip Chaffin’s Somethin’ Real Special (The Songs of Dorothy Fields), Judy Kuhn's All This Happiness, the 2013 New York Cast Recording of Passion and the Original Broadway Cast Recordings of Violet and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. Its second release, back in 2001, was an acclaimed album of Jerome Moross songs entitled Windflowers: The Songs of Jerome Moross. For more information, visit www.PSClassics.com

This is one of the two original golden apples from the 1954 production of The Golden Apple. Jerry & Hazel Moross had a close friend, Betty Frank, who had a Christmas ornament business. She made all the apples for the show.
